It was 100,000 degrees this weekend (okay, three zeros need to be removed) so we decided to try and cool off by heading to the beach. I like to live the fantasy that I’m on a deserted island so we searched for the emptiest beach I could find near us and it turned out to be Mansion Beach on Block Island. So armed a picnic lunch that could feed about 10 people (even though it was just the two of us), we set off on our great adventure to this little island. A photo tour of our day after the jump!
Logistics: There are multiple ferries running to Block Island from Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Long Island. We took the Block Island Express from New London, CT, which was a pretty painless experience. It’s a smooth 1 hr 15 minute boat ride. When you get off, there are multiple bike rentals but I would suggest walking roughly 10 minutes on High St to go to Beach Rose Bicycles. Their bicycles are much better maintained than the ones near the ferry and the owners are super friendly.
Food: we brought a bunch of stuff for a picnic but also stopped at Payne’s Doughnuts (not killer but still good) and Poor People’s Pub for some tasty bar snacks (the shrimp ceviche was yummy!). Captain Nick‘s next door had some great live music playing as well. You really don’t have to bring food; there are lots of great restaurants on the island.
Hope you enjoy the beach!
