Let’s explore Governor’s Island. You can take the 4,5 to Bowling Green, the R to Whitehall St, or the 1 to the South Ferry Terminal to catch the ferry out of Battery Maritime Terminal to Governor’s Island. It leaves every hour on weekdays and every 30 minutes on weekends and costs $2. The ferry ride is a quick 10 minutes but go to the top if you want to snap some nice pictures of Brooklyn and New York
Governor’s Island is a huge island with lots of green space and programming throughout the summer. It kind of reminds me of a giant playground. There are hammock areas and a treehouse and different forts to explore. There are also workshops and plays and a great jazz festival. When you get hungry, walk to the Liggett Terrace Food Court and get something from the many food trucks parked there. My personal favorite is Veronica’s Kitchen; they make delicious jerk chicken and plaintains. Take your meal to the Park Lawn where you can eat with a full view of the Statue of Liberty. Governor’s Island is the perfect place to spend a day away from the musty streets of Manhattan during the summer.
Pro tips: you’ll have the island to yourself if you go on a weekday, there are drinking fountains scattered throughout the island so you don’t need to bring water, and bring cash if you want to buy something from the food trucks (atms are scarce here).
