San Antonio is famous for the Alamo and the Riverwalk, which are both admittedly pretty cool. My favorite places to go, however, were toward Southtown, where there’s great food and great bars. It’s also within walking distance of the Riverwalk so it’s easily accessible if you are staying along the Riverwalk. Here are some of the best things I found down south this week.
La Villita Cafe is great for breakfast near the Riverwalk. I got every singly one of my breakfasts here this week. They have a light and tasty yogurt parfait and also a good ham, egg, and cheese on a croissant. The owners are very friendly and there’s even free wifi!
The Filling Station is a good place to get lunch. There’s very eclectic decor on the walls and they make great sandwiches. All the sandwiches are less than $7. I had a turkey club on a toasted brioche bun that was warm and delicious on a cold and rainy day. If you like spicy sandwiches, order the habanero roast beef.
Rosario’s is also a great place to get lunch. They have really good shrimp tacos (comes with guacamole and a cabbage slaw) and many lunch specials, including fajitas, enchiladas, and beef/chicken tacos. You get free chips and roasted tomato salsa and the service is really excellent here.
Southtown Yoga Loft is a fun yoga studio to practice in while you’re in town. The classes are $15 (10% off if you are a student or in the military) and mats/props are free to rent. I took a Strong Flow class and left feeling much free-er in my shoulders than I had been for a while.
Feast specializes in small dishes and all of them are good (literally, all, we ordered the entire menu). Standouts were the lamb belly, the corn fritters, and the endives. It’s a great place for a big group because you get to try lots of different dishes. Their transparent plastic chairs are also oddly extremely comfortable.
Bar 1919 has a really really large selection of whiskey and bourbon and the bartenders definitely know their stuff. Their cocktails are also fantastic and I pretty much liked every song they played in the background. It is located below Joe Blue’s and looks closed from the outside (it’s not!). Also, one of the best food trucks in San Antonio, Where Y’At, sometimes parks in the lot!
Bonus if you have car: go and have dinner at the Cove, which has a good selection of burgers made from local ingredients and Blue Bell ice cream. There’s also a bar with beer and live music as well as a car wash and a laundromat; it is truly everything to everyone.
